54 Were stooping still considering the matter,
54 One said a gourd was a round vegetable;
54 But others said it was a kind of grass;
54 While others class'd it as a sort of tree.
54 On hearing this, a certain old physician
54 Coming from Sicily interrupted them
54 As but a pack of triflers. They were furious,
54 Greatly enraged, and all most loudly cried
54 With one accord, that he insulted them;
54 For that such sudden interruptions
54 To philosophical discussion
54 Were ill-bred and extremely unbecoming.
54 And then the youths thought no more of the gourd.
54 But Plato, who was present, mildly said,
54 Not being at all excited by what pass'd,
54 That the best thing that they could do would be
54 The question to resume of the gourd's nature.
54 They would not hear him, and adjourn'd the meeting.
55 Alexis, that most witty poet, sets an entire course of πρόπομα before those who can understand him—
55 I came without perceiving it on a place
55 Which was exceedingly convenient.
55 Water was given me; and then a servant
55 Entered, and bore a table for my use;
55 On which was laid, not cheese, or tawny olives,
55 Or any dainty side-dishes and nonsense,
55 Which fill the room with scent, but have no substance;
55 But there was set before me a huge dish
55 Redolent of the Seasons and the joyful Hours—
55 A sort of hemisphere of the whole globe.
