Ἀλκιβιάδης αʹ Plato
129 Soc. And we admit that the user and what he uses are different things?
129 Alc. Yes.
129 Soc. Then the shoemaker and the harper are different from the hands and eyes that they use for their work?
129 Alc. Apparently.
129 Soc. And man uses his whole body too?
129 Alc. To be sure.
129 Soc. And we said that the user and what he uses are different?
129 Alc. Yes.
129 Soc. So man is different from his own body?
129 Alc. It seems so.
129 Soc. Then whatever is man?
129 Alc. I cannot say.
129 Soc. Oh, but you can—that he is the user of the body.
129 Alc. Yes.
130 Soc. And the user of it must be the soul?
130 Alc. It must.
130 Soc. And ruler?
130 Alc. Yes.
130 Soc. Now, here is a remark from which no one, I think, can dissent.
130 Alc. What is it?
130 Soc. That man must be one of three things.
130 Alc. What things?
130 Soc. Soul, body, or both together as one whole.
130 Alc. Very well.
130 Soc. But yet we have admitted that what actually rules the body is man?
130 Alc. We have.
130 Soc. And does the body rule itself?
130 Alc. By no means.
130 Soc. Because we have said that it is ruled.
130 Alc. Yes.
